This is an installment of an ongoing light fantasy novel. Truth of Shadows is the story of a young witch, told entirely from the perspective of her cat. To start at the beginning, see the Truth of Shadows: Prologue and Chapter 1.

The relief of having a witch, a name, and a purpose crashed into Moon like a wave. In a moment, it rewrote him, and the earth seemed to shift under his paws. When the wave passed, he suddenly felt solid, and real, in a way he realized that he hadn’t before. All the moments from here forward were changed forever, and it was almost as though he could feel them changing. He took a deep breath, and let the moment pass, as the wave was pulled back out to sea. There was still work to do.

Moon could blink his way in and out of the house, of course, even if Wren’s family didn’t want him. But that wouldn’t be enough. He needed to be accepted by the rightful masters of the place. Human superstitions about the sanctity of a home and the meaning of crossing a threshold are surprisingly correct, considering how much else they get wrong, If Moon was an outsider, coming and going by blinking through the walls, his powers there would be limited, and a proper bond with Wren would be impossible. As much as it pained him, Moon had to win over Wren’s parents.
